The Mac-Haydn Theatre collects for food banks, animal shelters

In addition to its traditional annual collection for area animal food shelters, this summer The Mac-Haydn Theatre will be accepting donations for area food banks.

"The food banks are getting hit very hard, as more people are having a harder time making ends meet," theatre representatives said, adding, "We know our audience is so very generous because our drive to help the area animal shelters, as well as other special appeals, have done so well throughout the years, and we know people will join us in helping the less fortunate families as well."

The drive for the animals raised more than $1,400 last summer, with the money going to shelters in Columbia, Berkshire, Albany, and Schenectady counties.

Food banks throughout the areas from which Mac-Haydn patrons come will benefit from their generosity. The theatre staff is sure that everyone wants to help, and bringing a donation to the theatre when they come for a show will be easier than making a special trip to the food bank where they live.

A collection point will be in the theatre lobby, and containers for monetary donations will be available as well.

Over the years Mac-Haydn drives to help others have resulted in several cartons of food, games, and personal items that were sent to Operation Adopt-A-Soldier of Saratoga to service men and women in the Middle East; carloads of animal food for shelters; two pallets of clothing, food, and toys for Feed the Children; clothing and household items for victims of Hurricane Andrew; and several thousand dollars for victims of other disasters, such as flooding in the midwest and Hurricane Katrina.
