PHOTOGRAPHS OF CELEBRITIES 1890-1900

Updated March 25, 2007

A box of black and white 5" x 7" prints of photos of actors from the late 19th and early 20th century was donated to the tag sale at the First Congregational Church of Willliamstown. These are NOT the original photos, they are prints made from the negatives or created by re-photographing the originals. I have identified the seated photo of Charles Coghlan, the head shot of Marie Dressler, and the head shot of Fay Templeton as having been taken at or by the Eddowes Brothers Studio, 26 West 23rd Street in New York City, a studio active in the first decade of the 20th century.

All that being said, these are lovely, clear prints in excellent condition. If you click on the thumbnails you will see them in all their crystal clear glory. The Church and I would love to see these photos all correctly identified, and then transferred into the hands of a major collection or to the descendants of these talented folks.

UPDATE!!
Heres an interesting article about research into plays of this period from the 3/24/07 issue of the New York Times.

The photos of Harriet Hubbard Ayer have gone to the Harriet Hubbard Ayer Society, operated by one of her descendants; and the photos of Amelia Swilley Bingham have gone to the Hicksville Historical Society in Hicksville, Ohio, Amelia's birthplace.

If you can add any further information about these photographs, the photographer(s), or the subjects, please e-mail me!
